Falcons

There are about 40 species in the genus Falco, about half of which are 'actual' falcons (i.e. have 'falcon' in their common English species name). The majority of the rest are kestrels, and there are four hobbies as well as the one and only merlin.

The genus gives its name to the family and order that it belongs to. The family Falconidae also includes the caracaras (native to South and Central America), and the order Falconiformes also includes what Wikipedia describes as "a handful of enigmatic Paleogene [i.e. extinct] species".
